Site fuel emissions calculator
Enter the litres burnt on site and get tonnes of CO2e, using the current DESNZ conversion factors. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.
Off-road plant, generators, dumpers and lighting towers.
0 tCO2e
Total Scope 1 fuel emissions
0 tCO2e
Litres multiplied by the DESNZ 2026 factor, divided by 1,000. Nothing is stored or sent.
The factors used
Kilograms of CO2e per litre, direct combustion only. Source: DESNZ GHG conversion factors 2026, flat file v1.2, revised July 2026, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Published by DESNZ and Defra.
| Fuel | kg CO2e per litre | Typical use on site |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel, average biofuel blend | 2.58354 | Road diesel in vans, cars and site vehicles. |
| Gas oil (red diesel) | 2.75541 | Off-road plant, generators, dumpers and lighting towers. |
| Diesel, 100% mineral (stationary) | 2.66155 | Stationary generators running on pure mineral diesel. |
| Petrol, average biofuel blend | 2.075 | Small plant, pumps, breakers and petrol vehicles. |
| LPG | 1.55713 | Cabin heaters and forklifts on bottled gas. |
| Burning oil (kerosene) | 2.54016 | Space heaters and heating oil. |
| Fuel oil | 3.17492 | Heavy fuel oil boilers. |
| HVO | 0.03558 | Renewable diesel. Its biogenic CO2 is reported outside the scopes, not in this total. |
Mistakes that move the number
Red diesel treated as road diesel
Gas oil runs about 7% higher per litre. On 18,000 litres that is roughly 3 tonnes of CO2e missing.
Delivered litres, not burnt litres
Deliveries are not consumption. Count what was drawn from the tank, or adjust deliveries for the change in stock over the period.
The full method, with worked examples, is in how to calculate site fuel emissions.
Questions
How do I calculate CO2e from litres of diesel?
Multiply the litres by the emission factor for that fuel, then divide by 1,000 for tonnes. For example, 4,000 litres of average-blend diesel at 2.58354 kg CO2e per litre is about 10.3 tonnes CO2e.
Is red diesel the same as diesel for carbon reporting?
No. Red diesel is gas oil and has its own factor (2.75541 kg CO2e per litre, against 2.58354 for average-blend road diesel). Using the road diesel factor for site plant understates the figure.
Where do the factors come from?
DESNZ GHG conversion factors 2026 (flat file v1.2, revised July 2026), published by DESNZ and Defra under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Does the calculator include HVO?
Yes. The HVO factor covers the fossil emissions only. DESNZ reports the biogenic CO2 outside the scopes, so it is not in this total.
Is this enough for SECR or a Carbon Reduction Plan?
It gives you the Scope 1 fuel figure. A report also needs the period, the boundary, the other scopes and the evidence behind each litre figure.
Keep the litres, the evidence and the total in one place.
MetricOra records fuel from receipts and meter readings, picks the right factor per record and shows the calculation behind every figure.
